U.S. Department of Education TV Show: High Performing Teachers "High Performing Teachers: Leading Students to Success in the 21st Century," this month's ED TV show, airs May 20 at 8:00 pm ET. Spellings Names 44 Javits Fellows Secretary Spellings named 44 Jacob K. Javits fellows to pursue graduate study in selected fields within the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Selected from 899 applicants, fellows are chosen on the basis of superior academic achievement, financial need, and exceptional promise. Report on Smaller Learning Communities When it comes to school size, smaller is not always better. A new study released by ED indicates that while there may be less school violence, more student participation in extracurricular activities and a higher percentage of students planning to attend college, there also is a challenge in recruiting experienced math and science teachers and providing rigorous courses for talented students. 2008 Summer Reading Initiative Secretary Spellings; Wendy Bhagat, senior vice president, First Book; and Heidi Kilgras, editorial director, Random House Children's Books announced the availability of free books through the 2008 Summer Reading Initiative. Announced at Edward Brooke Charter School in Boston, Mass., the Initiative marks the first stage of a national distribution of over 850,000 free, new Random House children's books to schools, libraries and literacy organizations serving low-income youth across the country. Educators: Register Now for Summer Workshops Teachers and other educators are encouraged to register now to attend one of the U.S. Department of Education's summer workshops, where teachers share successful strategies to raise student achievement. Teaching Resources: Skin, Bones, Louisiana Purchase and More Skin, muscle, bone, cellular and molecular biology, the Louisiana Purchase, slavery, and maps of a voyage by Sir Frances Drake are among the topics of new resources at FREE, the website that makes teaching resources from federal agencies easier to find. Grant Opportunities Notices inviting applications have been issued recently under ED programs that include the following: Advanced Placement Incentive Program, Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISI) and Native American-Serving Nontribal Institutions (NASNTI) Programs, Underground Railroad Educational and Cultural Program, College Cost Reduction and Access Act Hispanic-Serving Institutions (CCRAA-HSI) Program, and Predominantly Black Institutions Program.
